Supporting HP TeachNow, v 1.1 update

HP TeachNow and volume licensing
HP TeachNow student desktops execute on either the HP st5742 or HP st5747 flashless (diskless) “streaming” thin clients.
• The st5742 is used with a standard Microsoft volume licensing agreement (VLA).
• The st5747 is designed for use with a Microsoft VECD type licensing scheme.
These thin clients are the only supported student desktop devices for HP TeachNow. The customer device selection
depends on the type of Microsoft licensing they will use.
OS licensing and client types
HP st5742 with Microsoft Diskless COA
Microsoft requires that:
• Any access device that remotely executes a Microsoft desktop operating system (such as Windows XP or
Windows 7) must be equipped with a Windows diskless COA (Certificate of Authenticity, licensed to run the
corresponding OS), and
• Any institution using this diskless COA must have a Microsoft volume license agreement for the operating
systems that run on these devices.
The HP st5742 has a Windows Diskless COA (either Windows Vista or Windows 7 diskless COA). Both COAs include
downgrade rights to execute Windows XP remotely. If the HP st5742 streaming client with the Microsoft diskless COA is
used then the institution operating the machines must have a volume license with Microsoft for streaming the appropriate
number of desktops to end-point devices.
• The Microsoft volume licensing agreement can be ordered through HP.
o
If the VLA is ordered through HP then the customer can also order the HP
TeachNow Supplementary Disk DVD.
The HP TeachNow Supplementary Disk DVD contains pre-built Microsoft desktop
operating system files that are prepared as streamable images, suitable for use with the
HP st5742.
These images simplify image creation and deployment.
The images are not licensed for use on the HP st5747.
• If the customer has a valid existing volume license, or acquires the VL directly from Microsoft:
o The customer can legally use the HP st5742 clients as streaming thin clients, but
o Customer cannot order the HP TeachNow Supplementary Disk DVD if they have
not purchased the Microsoft VL through HP.
HP is not authorized to provide these images unless HP can document that the customer
has the appropriate volume licensing.
Purchase of a Microsoft VL through HP is the only acceptable documentation.
HP st5747 (non-COA)
The HP st5747 has the same specifications as the st5742 streaming client but the device is NOT licensed to be streamed
a Microsoft volume licensed image. The HP st5747 requires Microsoft Diskless non-COA licensing, typically through the
VECD (Windows Vista Enterprise Centralized Desktop) licensing program from Microsoft but also possible by purchasing
of a number of retail OS licenses equivalent to the number of HP st5747s they will deploy. VECD is the preferred and
most cost effective alternative.
The institution is responsible for purchasing the necessary number of licenses, installing the software on a reference thin
client (an st5747 equipped with USB DVD drive and 16GB SSD disk), and using the image capture tools supplied with
HP TeachNow to create a streamable image from the installed OS image.
