PCI Hot Plug Technology
With PCI Hot Plug capabilities, you can remove and add PCI expansion
boards without powering down the server, but you must use the proper
procedure. For procedures, see the “PCI Hot Plug LEDs and Button” and
“Installing Hot-Plug Expansion Boards” sections in this chapter.
If you are installing a PCI expansion board, plan the SCSI configuration
before installing the board. Consult the following sources of information when
planning the SCSI installation:
For installation information and controller configuration, refer to the
documentation that ships with the SCSI drives.
For information on compatibility of SCSI controllers with SCSI drives
in this server, refer to the Compaq website:
www.compaq.com/products/storageworks/array_SCSI_controllers.html
For information on SCSI cabling, see Chapter 6, “Server Cabling.”
For information on using RBSU to set up a SCSI drive array, see
Chapter 7, “Server Configuration and Utilities.”
PCI Hot Plug System
A PCI Hot Plug-capable system includes the system hardware, operating
system, and device driver support for PCI Hot Plug. An existing expansion
board is hot-plug capable as long as it complies with the established PCI
specifications and has hot-plug device driver support. If any of the three
required components are not hot-plug capable, the system is still fully
functional, though not hot-plug capable.
PCI Hot Plug Application
The PCI Hot Plug application, which varies for each operating system, is the
user interface of the PCI Hot Plug architecture. The application performs the
following functions:
Controls power to all PCI Hot Plug slots
Enables configuration of the hot-plug options
Reports the status of all expansion boards in the system
