Introduction The HP ProLiant DL2000 is part of the ProLiant DL Multi Node Servers line. The DL2000 extends the benefits of the DL1000 with individual node serviceability. We designed the DL2000 to optimize data center space, increase performance while lowering energy consumption, and provide flexible configurations that fit into existing industry-standard racks. This flexible design lets you configure the DL2000 for different application requirements, from more I/O, to more storage, to more compute power.

Chassis design The DL2000 provides a consolidated infrastructure that allows you to manage up to four independent servers in a 2U chassis with the effort of managing one. The 2U HP ProLiant e2000 chassis includes two or four independent DL170e server nodes so you can customize the DL2000 chassis for your environment—with four 1U nodes or two 2U nodes (Figure 1). The DL2000 offers hot-pluggable nodes that you can remove without affecting the operation of other nodes.

Riser options The DL2000 supports one PCIe 2.0 x16 slot per node for the 1U node. For the 2U node, it supports up to three PCIe slots per node – more than any other multi-node server in the industry. This PCIe slot capability supports both dual-width and up to 300W graphics cards. HP used signal integrity testing to evaluate multiple PCIe options to make sure the system could communicate reliably and support the three PCIe slot configuration.

Figure 2. Hard drive configurations The DL2000 has an embedded SATA controller that supports hot-plug (with advanced pack) so there is no need to use a slot for hot-plug SATA RAID. The controller supports RAID0, RAID1, and RAID10 with six SATA connections to the drives. The DL2000 also supports the latest HP Smart Array disk controllers in a PCIe slot for hardware-based SAS and SATA RAID. You can have the highest spindle count per node when you use two 2U nodes and the 24 SFF disk drive cage.

I/O features The rear of the server chassis houses I/O connectors and ports, including video, serial, Ethernet, and USB ports. You can use an internal USB port to boot a hypervisor or operating system, freeing up disk drive space. An integrated dual-port 1 Gb NIC provides two ports on the rear of the server. One of the Ethernet ports shares Lights-out management traffic, reducing the need for an extra switch port for management.

The primary power capping modes include:  The no-redundancy option allows you to run the entire chassis and all server nodes on one or two power supplies as long as the total power consumption fits in the power envelope. The chassis shuts down if you have a power failure.  The AC-redundancy-with-throttling option allows servers to run at maximum performance. The chassis draws its power from both power supplies.

For example, the savings associated with each 1200W 94% efficient power supply per year over a 90% efficient power supply: 1200W at 50% load = 600W x 4% improvement= 24W savings 24W power supply savings x 2.

Figure 4. DL2000 removable nodes Hot-pluggable power supplies and disk drives The DL2000 offers hot-pluggable, redundant power supplies (Figure 4 above). If one power supply fails, the other power supply keeps the server running while you replace the defective power supply. Additionally, hot-plug disk drives offer flexibility for data storage and service in the event that a disk drive fails. Figure 5 shows how to identify the power supply and node locations from the rear of the DL2000. Figure 5.

Fans and fan control Standard fan configuration for the e2000 chassis includes four, 80-mm non-hot-plug fans. If a fan fails, the DL2000 implements fan zoning and takes down only those nodes behind the fan. The remaining nodes on the opposite side of the chassis continue to run. Each node sees only the two fans that are directly in front of that node, allowing for greater uptime. Figure 6 illustrates thermal management architecture in the DL2000. Figure 6.

Figure 7. Bezel and LED configurations Management The DL2000 offers management by HP Lights-Out 100i (LO100i), which provides embedded, basic system board management capabilities. A more robust remote management package than other multi node server standard offerings, Lights-Out 100i Remote Management lets you remotely control and manage a DL2000.

Conclusion The HP ProLiant DL2000 Multi Node Server offers a solution for small- and medium-sized businesses that need greater computing density and additional cost efficiencies over traditional servers. The DL2000 helps you increase performance and easily manage server hardware. Rated number one in server power performance, the DL2000 also lets you reduce energy expense. The server uses Intel processor technologies and DDR3 memory. Its architecture brings a new level of power sharing to rack-based servers.
