ProLiant DL145 G2 Server Best Practices and General Information

1 Introduction
The purpose of this document is to provide general information on architectural and functional
characteristics that are unique to the ProLiant DL145 G2 server and Lights-Out 100i Remote Management
and leveraging the functionality in best practice maintenance procedures.
2 Updating System BIOS and Lights-Out 100i Remote Management (BMC) Firmware
Because the ProLiant DL145 G2 server is a racked product and typically operates in a headless
configuration and without a floppy drive, updating the System BIOS and Lights-Out 100i Remote
Management (BMC) Firmware can be challenging. There are three methods available for remotely
updating the System BIOS and Lights-Out 100i Remote Management Firmware:
PXE
Lights-Out 100i Remote Management / Command Line Protocol (CLP)
Removable Media
2.1 Recommended System BIOS and Lights-Out 100i Remote Management Firmware Versions
HP strongly recommends using the most current System BIOS and Lights-Out 100i Remote
Management Firmware versions available for a specific platform. However, there are two Lights-Out
100i Remote Management Firmware versions available for the ProLiant DL145 G2 server:
1.0x (IPMI 1.5)
1.2x (IPMI 2.0).
IMPORTANT: The 1.0x code base is strictly for HP XC Cluster software customers, or customers
using XC Cluster components. The 1.2x code base is intended for broader distribution for non-XC
Cluster implementations.
System BIOS and Lights-Out 100i Remote Management Firmware both use the HP ROMPaq flash
tool that is used on all ProLiant hardware platforms and is available from the HP support site at the
following URL:

2.2 PXE
PXE, (Pre-boot Execution Environment), is the most commonly used method for performing remote
System BIOS and Lights-Out 100i Remote Management Firmware upgrades. Refer to the white
paper
