Backup & Restore of Lotus Domino Cluster using Data Protector
3
1. Abstract
This document describes steps necessary to implement support for Lotus Domino
Cluster with Data Protector. The versions of HP OpenView Storage Data Protector
addressed in this document are Data Protector A.05.10 and Data Protector
A.05.50.
2. Introduction
The Lotus Domino cluster components are installed with the Lotus Domino 6
Enterprise server or the Lotus Domino 6 Utility server. The components keep replica
Domino databases synchronized, and they communicate with each other to ensure
that the cluster is running efficiently and smoothly.
Unlike Operating System clusters (MSCS, MC/ServiceGuard cluster, and Veritas
cluster) the Lotus Domino cluster is an end application cluster. Which means that it
does not provide the cluster resources failover to a secondary cluster node in case
the primary cluster node gets unavailable, but just assures that a Lotus client can
access a replica database on another Domino server in case the Domino database
on the initial Domino server gets unavailable for connection. All the servers in a
Domino cluster continually communicate with each other to keep updated on the
status of each server and to keep database replicas synchronized.
The Domino cluster also lets the user to set limits for workload balancing, track the
availability of servers and databases, and add servers and databases to the cluster.
To take advantage of failover and workload balancing, databases and replicas are
distributed throughout the cluster. Replica of every database on every server is not
needed and the number of replicas created for a database depends on how busy
the database is and how important it is for users to have constant access to that
database.
3. Limitations and Assumptions
In the document we assume the following:
• Lotus Domino cluster is part of the Lotus Domino 6 Enterprise server or the Lotus
Domino 6 Utility server
• Lotus Domino 6 covers both the Lotus Domino 6.0.x and the Lotus Domino
6.5.x version and the Lotus Domino Cluster functionality is the same in both
versions
