Neoview Database Administrator's Guide (R2.4)

2 Getting Started
Your system is delivered ready to use:
The system is preconfigured.
Table spaces are available and ready for data.
ODBC is installed and ready to go. For details on installing ODBC drivers, see the Neoview
ODBC Driver Manual.
This chapter provides an overview of the Neoview platform and covers the administrative tasks
you need to perform when you first receive your system.
Additional administrative tasks are covered in
“Managing Roles, User IDs, and Linux Accounts” Chapter 3 (page 21)
“Planning Your Database” Chapter 4 (page 33)
“Managing Database Objects” Chapter 5 (page 37)
This chapter describes:
“Security Considerations” (page 15)
“Java Considerations” (page 16)
“Management Tools” (page 17)
“Starting the Neoview DB Admin Tool” (page 17)
“Working With Schemas” (page 18)

Security Considerations
Limited Access on the Neoview platform
Neoview is a secure platform to which access is limited to a few controlled entry points:
ODBC or JDBC
Neoview DB Admin
Neoview Command Interface (NCI)
Neoview Management Dashboard
Neoview Performance Analyzer
Each of these entry points is carefully controlled by the Neoview operating system and database
software. The operating system also enforces a support policy that allows for support and
maintenance activities while at the same time preventing access to customer data.
Connection Timeout
ODBC and JDBC data sources timeout after ten minutes on a idle connection. After the connection
has timed out you must log in again to reestablish the connection and submit a query. The ten
minute default time can be changed by HP Support.
