Online Data Migration Using the iSR6200
in Cluster Configurations
1
Introduction
This applications note explains how to insert the iSR6200 Series Intelligent Storage Router when a
cluster configuration is required for online data migration. It contains the following information:
“Online Data Migration Methods” on page 2:
“Method 1—Generic Method (Cluster Downtime During Insertion)” on page 3
“Method 2—Online Migration with Zero Downtime” on page 3
“Method 3—Online Migration with Minimal Downtime” on page 3
“Method 4—Online Migration with Cluster Failover” on page 4
“Inserting the Router into an MSCS Data Path” on page 5
“Inserting the Router into an HP-UX Serviceguard Solutions Metrocluster” on page 6:
“HP-UX 11.23 (PVLinks)” on page 6
“HP-UX 11.31” on page 7
“Inserting the Router into a VMware Cluster” on page 7
“Inserting the Router into a Solaris Cluster” on page 8
For online migration of cluster configurations, the iSR6200 can be in a data path performing data
migration while allowing read/write access to the source array for the cluster nodes. All of the normal
cluster functionality is executed as if the cluster nodes are directly accessing the source array. For details
on how to present LUNs to cluster nodes, refer to the Data Migration Service for iSR6200 User’s Guide.
Online migration is supported in almost all cluster configurations, including Microsoft Cluster Service
(MSCS) on Windows
®
Server 2003 and 2008, Solaris
®
, and VMWare
®
.
In online insertion, the iSR6200 inserts itself into the active I/O path while the cluster is online, without
causing functional or performance issues. Online insertion is supported only in specific cluster
configurations, such as Windows 2008 clusters using native Microsoft Multipath I/O (MPIO) and VMware
clusters.
