DSS License Activation and

Rehosting

Introduction

Starting December 2, 2013 there are new processes and new web sites associated with DSS

licensing. DSS licenses will still be controlled by the HP Software licensing group, but DSS has now

moved from the older Software Licensing Management (SLM) system to the HP Licensing for

Software (Poetic) system.

In addition to the new processes and websites, there are new product numbers for DSS licenses

starting on December 2

. The old DSS license product numbers will be obsolete. Please refer to the

web site www.hp.com/go/dss for more information on ordering DSS licenses. When licenses are

ordered after December 2

the documentation received by the customer will be slightly different

than what was previously received by the customer.

To differentiate between the licenses purchased before or after December 2

2013 the customer

can look at the license documentation they received. The older style license documentation has a

section that includes the HP Order Number and a License Number. The newer license

documentation does not have the HP order number or a License Number, but instead has an

Entitlement Order Number (EON). See the graphics below.

Example of customer documentation for licenses purchased after December 2nd, 2013 The main processes utilized for DSS licenses are activation and rehosting. Licenses purchased after December 2nd will use the Poetic websites for activation and rehosting starting on December 2nd. The older DSS licenses will still use the older processes for activation and rehosting for a time before moving over and using the new processes. See the sections below on activation and rehosting for more detail.

When the new Poetic system is ready to process activation requests for licenses purchased before December 2nd customers will be redirected from the SLM website to the Poetic website. When activating the older DSS licenses using the new process the License Number should be used wherever the instructions below say to use the EON. Activation Process Two pieces of information are required to activate a license: the EON and the MAC address of the server on which the license will be used.

On the next screen we will make several configurations: In the Target Name field enter a name for the target server. This can be anything you want, it can be the actual host name or IP address of the server or any text string that is useful to you. Or, you can have the system suggest a name for you. Enter the MAC address to which the selected licenses will be bound. The MAC address should be entered in the format shown: with a dash between each set of two characters.

License Rehosting Introduction DSS license rehosting is the process of moving a license from the MAC address to which it is currently locked to another MAC address. This is occasionally necessary if the DSS software is being moved to a new server to upgrade software or hardware or possibly if the current DSS server has had a problem and required a network card change. A license can only be rehosted 3 times. If there is an attempt to move the license a fourth time the customer receives an error message.

To start the rehosting process the customer should access the licensing website and sign in using HP Passport. After signing into the licensing website the customer should click the Rehost menu in the left side panel. This will bring them to the screen shown below. The next step in the process is to identify the license that the customer would like to rehost. When working with DSS licenses the Locking ID is the MAC address that the license is currently locked to.

After selecting the new target you will be brought to a screen giving the details of the rehost you have configured: including the license type and information for the new target. Click the Finish button to complete the rehost. The final screen shows the license key codes that have been rehosted. These license key codes can be entered into the DSS Configuration utility for the DSS server at the specified MAC address. The key codes are automatically emailed to the signed in user.
