1 Introduction
This document provides an overview of the HP Insight Virtualization Manager software and
logical servers features. System administrators can use this document as an introduction to the
Virtualization Manager and as a guide to using the software to visualize and manage systems
and workloads, and to create and manage logical servers. For information about using HP Insight
Dynamics, see the HP Insight Dynamics 6.0 Getting Started Guide.
This document is intended to be used by system administrators, application administrators,
capacity planners, and other technical professionals involved with data center operations,
administration, and planning. An understanding of HP-UX, Windows, or Linux system
administration concepts and procedures is assumed.
The HP Insight Virtualization Manager software provides a framework for visualizing the HP
Insight Dynamics suite. All of the systems and workloads that you are authorized to view are
displayed in a graphical view. The hierarchical relationships between systems and their current
utilization metrics appear on a single screen. From the graphical view, you can click technology
icons for quick navigation to information and management pages. Virtualization manager also
provides drop-down menus, management tabs, and a convenient toolbar.
This chapter provides the following information:
• Features of the Virtualization Manager, including Virtualization Manager tabs, menus, and
toolbar (see “Features” (page 9)).
• How to start the Virtualization Manager from HP SIM and switch to views for server blades,
virtual machines, logical servers, and other technologies (see “Starting Virtualization
Manager” (page 17)).
• Key concepts and terminology for understanding HP Insight Dynamics and features of the
Virtualization Manager (see “Concepts and terminology” (page 19)).
Features
The Virtualization Manager provides several features that let you visualize and manage Insight
Dynamics. Using the Virtualization Manager, you can:
• Customize the level of detail that you want to see
• Easily access additional applications to manage and configure systems and workloads
• Inventory Insight Dynamics
• Centrally configure your server resources for optimum utilization
• Manage logical servers
For an overview of Insight Dynamics applications, see the HP Insight Dynamics 6.0 Getting Started
Guide at www.hp.com/go/insightdynamics/docs.
Virtualization Manager tabs
The Virtualization Manager provides four tabs to move between the main views in Virtualization
Manager, Capacity Advisor, and Global Workload Manager:
• Visualization tab – Displays the Virtualization Manager Visualization View that lets you
visualize all controlling technologies in Insight Dynamics and easily navigate to the
management application for each technology. For more information, see “Using the
visualization view” (page 23).
• Workload tab – Displays the Virtualization Manager Workload View that lets you view all
of the servers and workloads in Insight Dynamics, using a compact table format. See “Using
the workload view” (page 30).
• Shared Resource Domain tab – Lets you view and manage Shared Resource Domains (SRDs)
using Global Workload Manager (gWLM). gWLM allows you to centrally define
