HP-UX Virtual Partitions 6.0 Administrator Guide
7 Log files, backing up, restoring, and recovering
Log files
The vPars v6.0 components use multiple log files, all of which are located on the VSP. Following
is a list of the log files:
• /var/adm/syslog/syslog.log
• /var/opt/hpvm/common/hpvm_mon_log
• /var/opt/hpvm/common/command.log
• /var/opt/hpvm/guests/<guest>/log
• /var/opt/hpvm/guests/<guest>/console/conslog
• /var/opt/hpvm/guests/<guest>/FPL/SEL
Backing up vPar configuration in the VSP
Use the normal procedures to backup the /var/opt/hpvm directory. Backup may only occur
during a period when HPVM is down or it is ensured that there are no changes to vPar configuration
or vPar run-state.
Restoring a backed up file
To restore a vPar configuration:
1. Shutdown HPVM using /usr/bin/hpvm stop.
2. Restore the /usr/bin/hpvm directory using the normal restore procedures. The restore
process will only work if:
• There have been no OS or vPar product version changes.
• VSP has not had any hardware changes, such as addition or removal of I/O devices,
memory, or CPU.
3. Restart the VSP using /etc/shutdown -r.
Recovering a vPar
To recover a virtual partition, perform the following from the VSP:
1. Record the contents of the AUTO file in the EFI area of the primary boot disk pointed to by
stable storage.
2. Boot the target partition and use the EFI LANBOOT command to connect to your Ignite-UX
recovery server.
3. Run the Ignite-UX recovery as you would on a server not running vPars, entering the data (boot
disk and LAN) of the target partition.
4. After the target partition is recovered, set the AUTO file back to its original contents that was
recorded.
