metrics, and provides recommendations on the best fit
for the various server workloads. Recommendations
are displayed via a five-star rating system, so you can
easily see which physical servers are better matches
when moving a logical server. With the Smart Solver’s
five-star rating system, you’ll see in real time if a
logical server can be moved. If so, you can actually
drag and drop the logical server to place it in the
new location.
In addition, HP Insight Dynamics – VSE makes it quick
and easy to simulate different configuration or con-
solidation scenarios that allow you to ask “what if?”
questions based on real data. And with energy usage
awareness built in, based on hundreds of power-
related data points per server per day, you can make
decisions on the fly to increase the energy efficiency
of your data center.
Balance physical and virtual resources.
HP Insight Dynamics – VSE gives you the ability to
easily move virtual and physical resources to balance
resources. This capability is made possible by the use
of logical servers. A logical server is a server profile
that is easily created and freely moved across physical
or virtual machines. By detaching the logical identity
from the physical resource, you can create or move
logical servers on any suitable virtual or physical
machine—on demand. This means the logical server
brings the freedom and flexibility of virtualization to
physical servers.
The logical server describes the system image
resources, whether these are virtual, physical, shared,
or unshared. For example, a logical server includes
entitlements such as processor and memory require-
ments and unique IDs for network and storage
connections—everything required for the OS and
application stack to operate. Logical servers are
currently available on HP BladeSystems with HP
ProLiant and Integrity server blades, and with
VMware and Microsoft Hyper-V virtual machines.

Drawing on included server migration functionality, the
Insight Dynamics – VSE software suite gives you the
flexibility to quickly move server workload profiles
between physical and virtual server resources on
demand as your business requirements change. This
includes the capability to migrate existing servers
and their content to the latest HP BladeSystem or HP
ProLiant server technologies or supported virtualization
platforms from independent software vendors without
altering the source server’s operating system or appli-
cations in any way. With this level of control, you can
more easily increase the efficiency of server resource
utilization and improve availability during planned
maintenance or in the event of a server failure.
In addition, you can control power and cooling costs
more effectively by taking logical server resources
offline when an application doesn’t require the system
resources, and then bringing the same resources back
online when the demands of the application change.

Logical servers are planned to be available for HP Integrity Virtual
Machines later in 2009.
