Chapter 1 Server Administration Using HP TopTools
2
Audience Assumptions
This guide is for a network administrator familiar with installing and configuring
computer and network software. You should be familiar with:
• Installing, configuring, and administrating network operating system
software, including web-based products, for operating systems such as
Microsoft Windows, Novell NetWare, or SCO UNIX
• Microsoft Internet Explorer (v4.x)
• SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) software
• TCP/IP or IPX addressing
If you are unfamiliar with software installation, or have not previously
administered computer networks, contact your network operating system vendor or
Hewlett-Packard for technical support.
HP TopTools Helps Monitor Servers
To help maintain your HP NetServers, HP TopTools Auto Alert and Instant
TopTools provide you with extensive and timely information. These easy-to-use
tools are ideal for the small business environment, but will also integrate well in a
large business environment. You will know when a server is experiencing
problems, what to do about it, or if it is likely to have problems in the near future.
HP TopTools Auto Alert simplifies network administration by automatically
forwarding event messages (called "alerts") from your HP NetServers to a client
PC (called "PC console") or PCs of your choice. It also supplies a centralized
place for all server alerts to be viewed. NetServer Agents installed on the server
forward alerts to your PC. These alerts identify changes in operating conditions,
such as a server hard disk is full, or a server NOS hang.
With HP Instant TopTools and a browser, you can get the latest information
about an HP NetServer. Run from a client or at the server's console, Instant
TopTools allows you to view alerts for that server, its status, and the status of
devices in the server (such as memory, mass storage, system environment, power
and BIOS versions).
