2 Installing operating system
This chapter describes how to prepare your server for operating system (OS) installation, install
the Oracle Linux and UEK on your HP DL980 server, and obtain OS update directly from Oracle.
Installation preparation
Before you begin installing OL and UEK on your HP DL980 server, ensure that you have obtained:
• all necessary installation documentation.
• the Oracle Linux for the Intel x86 Processor installation media set, make sure you have the
right version of x86 or x86_64.
The following sections describe how to prepare for your OS installation.

HP encourages you to review each of the following documents before you begin installing Oracle
Linux and Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel:
OS Release Notes and FAQ Oracle provides release notes on the Oracle Linux media

that is helpful to be aware of prior to installing Oracle Linux and Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel.
Downloading Oracle Linux from Oracle website
If you chose to not receive a media kit from HP containing the OL software or you need to create
a copy of the OL media, you must download the OL operating system directly from the Oracle
website.
NOTE: It is necessary to register at the Oracle website prior to download, which requires the
activation code when ordering OL.
Register and log in at the Oracle Unbreakable Linux Network website: http://linux.oracle.com
Methods of Installation
Installing using Oracle provided media
You can use the following steps to install Oracle Linux:
1. Ensure you have the correct server firmware versions before installing OL by going to the HP
website at http://www.hp.com and selecting Support & Driver.
2. Under the Support & Drivers for your products, perform the following substeps:
a. Click the Drivers and Software option.
b. Enter the model number of the server (for example, DL980) in the product field.
c. Press Enter.
d. Click on the product link that you want in the search results field.
3. Select cross operating system (BIOS, Firmware, Diagnostics, and so on) from the list of operating
systems.
4. If your server does not have the current firmware, locate it in the categorized list displayed,
and then click the adjacent Download button to download the tar file.
