This white paper describes how to use Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) to monitor JBoss
with HP Systems Insight Manager (SIM). This is demonstrated using the SNMP Adaptor (snmp-adaptor
module) from JBoss to intercept Java Management Extensions (JMX) notifications that are emitted by
Management Beans (MBeans), convert them to traps, and then send them to SNMP managers.
NOTE: The traps generated by the snmp-adaptor module contain fabricated Object Identifiers (OIDs)
because there is no Management Information Base (MIB) file that defines JBoss manageable objects at this
time. As such, this is not a complete solution, rather it is a demonstration of how SNMP could be used to
monitor JBoss if there were a valid MIB file.
Intended Audience
The intended audience for this document is enterprise customers who are considering monitoring JBoss
via SNMP with HP SIM on HP ProLiant and BladeSystem Server product.
Scope and Purpose
This white paper provides an example of how you might employ the SNMP Adaptor to monitor JBoss AS
traffic with the HP SIM product. The software components described in this paper are tested and validated
to run on HP ProLiant and BladeSystem Server products.
