HP AppSystems for Virtualized SAP HANA

Technical white paper | HP AppSystem for Virtual SAP HANA

A management station is required to host and run the VMware vCenter management and vSphere Client software and SAP
HANA Studio software; this software is required to manage the virtual images and templates and the SAP HANA database.
The management station is an optional item on the appliance order because some sites may already have a system capable
of hosting the required software and function. Providing information for connecting to the server is part of the appliance
installation process and should be provided as part of the prerequisites.
The storage component is included in the system overview diagram in Figure 1, and two IO accelerator cards used for HANA
logs that are not shown.

Four virtual machine templates
The appliance ships with a selection of four virtual machine templates from which to choose in a “t-shirt” sizing model;
these are labeled as hana64, hana128, hana256, hana384 and represent as extra-extra-small (XXS), extra-small (XS), small
(S), and medium (M). The selection criterion is based upon the size of the database needed for the development or test
environment ranging from 64GB to 384GB of RAM. The number of virtual CPUs is predetermined for each template based
upon the potential size of the database. Table 1 shows the template configurations.
Table 1: Virtual Machine Templates
Template RAM GB Virtual CPUs Template Name
XXS
64 5 hana64.ova
XS
128 10 hana128.ova

SAP HANA server key hardware components
The base SAP HANA host system is a ProLiant DL980 G7 server. The hardware components are the same as the HP
AppSystem SAP HANA large, single-node configuration and are as follows:
HP ProLiant DL980c G7 with eight (Intel E7-4870 2.4 GHz 30MB cache) processors (a total of 80 cores) and 1TB RAM
Two HP 785GB MLC PCIe IO Accelerators in RAID 0 (striped) configuration for HANA logs
HP P812 Smart Array Controller with 1GB flash-backed write cache for the D2700 disk drives
