The following FAQ covers majority of the questions related to customers using
the new Microsoft™ iSCSI initiator within a LeftHand SAN.
Microsoft™ ISCSI Initiator V2.0X
Q: Three different Microsoft™ iSCSI Initiator versions are available:
amd64fre, ia64fre, and x86fre. What version do I use for my operating system?
A: The x86fre builds are for computers based on the x86 processor architecture
running a 32bit version of the Windows operating system. The amd64fre
builds are for computers based on the x64 processor architecture running a
64bit version of the Windows or AMD operating system. The ia64fre builds are
for computers based on the ia64 Itanium architecture running a 64bit Itanium
version of the Windows operating system. Note that both AMD64 and EM64T
processors may run a 32bit version of the Windows operating systems
requiring the x86fre builds.
Q: What Microsoft™ iSCSI Initiators are supported with SAN/iQ?
A: Currently supported initiator versions are 2.04, 2.05, and 2.06 with
Windows 2000 and Windows 2003.
Q: What versions of the iSCSI Initiator support iSCSI Load Balancing?
A: 2.02 and higher
Q: What version of Windows does LeftHand Networks support with the
Microsoft™ iSCSI initiator?
A: For the 2.xx version of the iSCSI Initiator, Windows Server 2003, Windows
Small Business Server 2003, Windows 2000 (Service Pack 4) and Windows XP
(Service Pack 1). Windows 2008 Server comes with a built-in iSCSI initiator
from Microsoft.
Q: Does the new iSCSI initiator support Dynamic Disks?
A: Configuring volumes on iSCSI disks as Dynamic disk volumes using the
Microsoft™ software iSCSI initiator is not currently supported by Microsoft™
or LeftHand Networks on Windows 2000 or Windows 2003.
Q: Does the new iSCSI initiator support boot from SAN?
