16 Resolving Problems with Your Server
Backup Device
Not Appearing in
HD Server Admin
1. Check the lights on the drive.
• For an internal DAT drive, compare them to the tables on
page 11-2 and page 11-4.
• For an external tape drive, compare them to the
documentation for that drive.
2. Verify that you can load and eject a tape manually.
If you cannot, then call HP support per appendix A “Getting
Support” for a replacement.
CAUTION!
Do not remove the tape cartridge by force, which would void
your warranty. Your tape cartridge will be removed by the
warranty service and sent back to you.
To replace an HP DAT internal tape drive that was part of your
server product, see “Replace the Tape Drive” on page 11-28.
3. Verify that the tape drive is connected in one of the following ways:
• Externally attached to server’s rear SCSI connector—
HP DAT or DLT drives only. Make sure that the drive is
properly terminated (see step 10 on page 8-9). If you change
anything in this step, then restart the server (see “Restart”
on page 11-18) so that the tape drive will be recognized.
• Internally installed in the server—HP DAT drives only.
Drives not connected in these ways cannot be set up using
HD Server Admin. See page 8-10 and 9-1.
4. Verify that the SCSI ID of the tape drive is either 3 or 5. A drive
with SCSI ID 3 will appear in HD Server Admin as “Drive 1”.
A drive with SCSI ID 5 will appear as “Drive 2”. Drives with other
SCSI IDs will not appear. (To access the rear of an internal drive,
do the procedure “Open the Enclosure” on page 11-25.) If you
change anything in this step, then restart the server (see “Restart”
on page 11-18) so that the tape drive will be recognized.
5. If all above verifications show no problems, restart the server. See
“Restart” on page 11-18. Try the drive again.
6. If the tape drive still fails to work, then it may have failed. Call
HP support per appendix A “Getting Support” for a replacement.
To replace an HP DAT internal tape drive that was part of your
server product, see “Replace the Tape Drive” on page 11-28.
