Virus Prevention and Detection
The primary purpose of NAS is file serving. It is very likely files will be accessed by multiple
protocols (CIFS, NFS, HTTP, etc.) of which there will be many users. It is extremely important
that procedures and systems be in place to prevent a potential disaster (corruption, data loss,
system loss, etc.) via infection and that appropriate recovery schemes are planned in the event of
infection.
Your HP NAS VA utilizes the HP-UX operating system. Because of this, it is often assumed that
there is no need to safeguard against viruses. However, it is very likely that these NAS servers
will be used to host files from applications that have been inundated with viruses and worms.
Today, more than 90% of computer viruses are executable viruses that are usually spread via
electronic mail, and macro viruses that are embedded in files. Of those, Microsoft applications
(Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook) are by far the most frequent carriers of viruses. Files
generated and used by these applications are commonly used on NAS systems and should be
safeguarded appropriately in any NAS system.
The HP-UX OS has been tested and verified with Sophos Anti-Virus for Unix. Sophos Anti-Virus
offers HP NAS VA customers on-demand and scheduled scanning of the NAS file systems and it
also offers on-access scanning of clients on the network. Using anti-virus software is an excellent
means of preventing against virus infection, however, as mentioned earlier, “procedures and
systems” should be in place. Thus it is also prudent that users and administrators be aware of
practices and procedures that will guard against virus infection.
The anti-virus support for your NAS VA solution provides virus checking, automatic reporting, and
