Shared network port
Some servers offer a Shared Network Port (SNP) that allows network access to both iLO 3 and the server
through a single network port (see Figure 3), rather than dedicating a second port to iLO 3. With the
SNP, iLO 3 network traffic travels through a sideband connection on one of the NIC interfaces. Although
the iLO traffic shares a port with the server OS traffic, both iLO 3 and the server NIC have their own MAC
and IP address. iLO 3 using dual-MAC architecture provides an out-of-box shared network port; this
means that there is no need to run the configuration utility before you first log in to iLO 3.
Figure 3: These diagrams illustrate three possible port configurations for system management traffic.
Remote console and virtual media technologies
Through iLO 3 technologies such as remote console, virtual media, virtual power, and virtual serial port,
you can control iLO 3-managed servers efficiently. You can deploy new servers, install patches and hot-
fixes, perform routine maintenance tasks, or troubleshoot platform issues from any remote location.
Accessing the managed server console
iLO 3 lets you access the managed server using a text-based console, the Integrated Remote Console
(Microsoft® .NET framework based graphical console), or a Java-based Integrated Remote Console.
Text-based console (Virtual Serial Port)
You can use the iLO 3 Virtual Serial Port for text console access during POST and for text-based OSes like
Linux. iLO 3 contains hardware that can replace the physical serial port on the server's motherboard, and
the iLO 3 firmware provides a Java applet that connects to the server serial port. If you enable the serial
redirection feature on the server, iLO 3 intercepts the data coming from the serial port, encrypts it, and
sends it to an SSH client. Linux users must also set up a login shell to the serial port (TTYS0) and configure
the server to allow root access.
The redirection of text during the server boot process is available as an iLO 3 Standard feature on iLO 3
systems through the end of POST. Redirection of either text or graphics with iLO 3 after POST requires an
