Introduction
HP Integrated Lights-Out 3 (iLO 3) helps you meet demands for IT efficiency and responsiveness,
especially in corporate data centers. iLO 3 is an autonomous management subsystem residing on select
HP ProLiant and BladeSystem servers. It provides you with secure remote management capabilities,
regardless of server status or location. iLO 3 provides alerts, server status, power information, power
management, and remote control capabilities to diagnose OS or server problems remotely.
You can take advantage of the full functionality of iLO 3 by purchasing an iLO Advanced license or
purchasing Insight Control, the HP ProLiant lifecycle management solution. Refer to
http://h18013.www1.hp.com/products/servers/management/ilo_table.html to see the supported
capabilities in each licensing options.
This paper briefly discusses enhancements to iLO 3 beyond the previous iLO 2 capabilities. It describes
the iLO 3 architecture and its technologies that provide comprehensive remote management capabilities.
See the final section of this paper for more references about iLO technology.
iLO 3 enhancements
iLO 3 improves performance and expands functionality compared to iLO 2, including:
Faster processor provides better response and faster virtual media, thread and process protection, and
the horsepower to support current and future management features.
Faster processor and USB 2.0 give the virtual media a 3-5x performance increase
AES encryption engine provides the benefit of strong encryption without the typical performance impact
to system processor
Firmware improvements
Green Hills INTEGRITY Real Time Operating System (RTOS)
Kernel and application code now run in protected address spaces
The dual-MAC architecture provides an out-of-box shared management port; this means that there is no
need to run the configuration utility before you first log in to iLO 3.
Improved Windows Integrated Remote Console
8x performance increase over iLO 2
.NET framework allows a more robust GUI and broader browser support—previous ActiveX controls
limited the Windows remote console to Internet Explorer
Updated SSL and SSH for restricting access and encrypting data
JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) technology updates using push technology, meaning system
information is updated dynamically and is always current
New GUI web interface including a tree view structure that make it easier to navigate
The new user interface includes multi-monitor support and has a scalable display that lets you work with
less searching and scrolling.
See Table 1 for other iLO 3 attributes compared to iLO 2.
