HP Insight Remote Support Security Executive Summary

3
Overview
The HP Insight Remote Support solution is composed of three primary components:
Remote Device Monitoring (RDM)
Remote Data Collection (RDC)
Remote Device Access (RDA)
Each of these components is described in this document. In addition to the three main
components, information is provided on software management, application security, outbound
communications, inbound communications, and data handling security.
Remote Device Monitoring
Remote Device Monitoring monitors your environment for hardware events. If an event requires
HP intervention such as a hardware failure, it is automatically sent to HP for processing where it is
acted upon as per the service level agreement. Systems supported by the Insight RS solution
include servers, storage devices, network devices, and selected multivendor products. A detailed
list of supported hardware devices can be found in the release notes for your specific software
version at the URL shown on page 2 of this document.
Events sent to HP do not contain business data. Event information contains device specific
information (fault information and configuration details) for the failing device. This information
will also include device identification and contact information such as IP address and fully
qualified domain name, device administrator contact names, email addresses, and phone
numbers. To ensure that HP customer information is properly protected, HP has implemented a
range of industry standard security techniques that are described later in this document.
Remote Data Collection
Remote Data Collection has two purposes. Its first purpose is to collect device information (logs,
configuration information, etc.) to aid HP Support in the proper diagnosis of a failure. This basic
data collection is performed using standard web management tools like Web Based Enterprise
Services (WBEM) and Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP). This level of data collection is
standard for all Insight Remote Support installations.
Remote Data Collection can also be enabled for proactive service contracts. These enhanced data
collections collect information about the systems or environment and send the data to HP for
analysis. The data is analyzed by HP and is used to provide proactive assessment reports about
your IT environment, such as system health checks, current patching levels, firmware revision
reports, system audits, and availability reports. These reports are intended to be used to help
manage your IT environment and increase the overall availability of the systems in your IT
enterprise.
