Chapter 6: Configuring ProLiant VMware ESXi
Servers
Fulfill Configuration Requirements
To configure your ProLiant VMware ESXi servers to be monitored by Insight RS, complete the following
steps:

Make sure Insight RS supports your ProLiant VMware ESXi server by checking the HP
Insight Remote Support Release Notes.
Install and configure WBEM providers on the ESXi server. If using HP's distribution of
ESXi, all necessary WBEM providers are included.
Add the WBEM protocol credentials to the Insight RS Console.
Discover the ProLiant VMware ESXi server in the Insight RS Console.
Verify communication between the ESXi server and Insight RS.

To configure your monitored devices, complete the following sections:
Install an ESXi Distribution
There are two methods of obtaining ESXi:
l When ESXi is HP's distribution, which contains the WBEM providers (see "Obtain the HP ESXi
Distribution" below).
l When ESXi is VMware's distribution, which does not contain the WBEM providers. The WBEM
providers need to be installed separately, which are also available from HP (see "Obtain and Configure
the VMware ESXi Distribution" on the next page).
Obtain the HP ESXi Distribution
HP's distribution of VMware ESXi includes the necessary WBEM providers to send hardware events to
the Hosting Device. Use the root account credentials for the ESXi system when configuring the WBEM
protocols for this monitored device on the Hosting Device. The ability to send a test event from the
physical host is not possible because the VMware ESXi hypervisor is embedded and therefore the
console is not available to the user.
