Chapter 6: Configuring ProLiant VMware ESXi Servers

Obtain and Configure the VMware ESXi Distribution
HP has developed WBEM providers for VMware ESXi. The bundle contains the WBEM providers, and it is
necessary to download and install the bundle when the distribution files used to install the ESXi operating
system were obtained from VMware.

Add WBEM Credentials to Insight RS Console
Before discovering the ESXi ProLiant server, you must create WBEM protocol credentials in the Insight
RS Console. After this task is complete, you can discover the ESXi ProLiant server and it will start
reporting alerts to Insight Remote Support. Complete the following steps to create WBEM credentials in
the Insight RS Console:
1. In a web browser, log on to the Insight RS Console.
2. In the main menu, select Discovery and the Credentials tab.
3. Select Web-Based Enterprise Management (WBEM) from the Select and Configure Protocol
drop-down list and click New.
4. Fill in the required fields. Use the Username and Password that WBEM uses on the ProLiant ESXi
server and click Add.
5. Click the Sources tab and set up the IP range for the devices you want to discover.
6. Click Start Discovery.
Verify Communication
You can verify that the ESXi server has been discovered and configured correctly by running collections
on the server. Because ESXi cannot send test events, communication can be verified with collections
because both event monitoring and collections use the WBEM protocol you configured earlier.
After discovery, a Server Basic Configuration Collection is automatically run for the ESXi server. Verify
that this collection ran successfully on the Collection Services → Basic Collection Results tab in the
