Introduction This whitepaper clarifies the situation concerning VMware support by HP Insight Remote Support. It includes clarifications on VMware support on both the HP Insight Remote Support Advanced Central Management Server (CMS) and the HP Insight Remote Support Standard Hosting Device (HD) as well as on managed endpoint devices. This additional information will be incorporated into the HP Insight Remote Support documentation shortly.

The following are principles of the remote support environment:  Remote device monitoring (RDM) is performed on the underlying physical hosts only, not the VMware Guests.  Remote data collection (RDC) is supported on the underlying physical host, but only on VMware ESX and when the VMware ESX server is part of a SAN collection (Insight RSA only). RDC is not supported for VMware ESXi servers.

VMware managed systems do not require manual configuration of serial & product numbers When a VMware Guest is discovered, the VMware serial number and product number is identified. This serial number is unique for each Guest and is sufficient along with other sourced attributes to allow it to be recognized uniquely and thereby registered at the HP Datacenter. Although the VMware Guest is discovered, it will not become a monitored endpoint device as that is not supported today.
