About this guide Intended audience This book is intended for anyone who needs to use Netcool/OMNIbus desktop tools on UNIX or Windows Platforms to monitor HP ProLiant Servers and HP storage systems. It provides an overview of Netcool/OMNIbus components and the HP Insight integration module, as well as a description of the operator tasks related to event management using the desktop tools.

Product overview Product description HP Insight integration module for Netcool/OMNIbus is a comprehensive solution that provides infrastructure management across a wide range of operating system platforms. This functionality enables you to manage HP server and storage hardware, in addition to other enterprise resources, from a common Netcool/OMNIbus environment. Supported operating platforms for the host include HP-UX, Sun Solaris, Windows Server® 2000, Windows Server® 2003, Windows Server® 2008, and Linux.

HP hardware support The HP Insight Integration module for Netcool/OMNIbus has been developed to install and operate with Netcool/OMNIbus on all supported Windows® and UNIX platforms including Windows® 2008, Linux, and Solaris. NOTE: HP Insight Integration module for Netcool/OMNIbus has been verified on HP ProLiant servers and Sun SPARC systems configured as Netcool/OMNIbus on Windows® 2008, RHEL 5, SUSE 9, and Solaris 10.

Installation notes Netcool/OMNIbus components Operation of the Netcool/OMNIbus relies on the following three major components: • • • ObjectServer Probes Desktop tools ObjectServer The ObjectServer is the in-memory database server at the core of Netcool/OMNIbus. Alert information is forwarded to the ObjectServer from external programs such as probes, monitors, and gateways, stored and managed in database tables, and appears in the event list.

Merging the rules To merge the new rules files into the IBM Tivoli Netcool/OMNIbus Netcool Knowledge Library: NOTE: The following examples assume that $NCHOME or $OMNIHOME are set to /opt/netcool and that $NC_RULES_HOME is set to the Netcool home rules directory (by default, /opt/netcool/etc/rules). If a different path is used, replace all instances of /opt/netcool below with the correct path. 1. Copy the new files to the $NC_RULES_HOME directory. 2. Using the HP Insight Integration module for Netcool/OMNIbus Introduction The integration of HP ProLiant and Fibre Channel Management SNMP events into the Netcool/OMNIbus provides valuable hardware status and event information that helps simplify the systems management environment, enabling you to proactively manage ProLiant hardware with other enterprise resources from within a common Netcool/OMNIbus environment.

Event correlation The rules and lookup files for Netcool/OMNIbus provides rules to correlate nearly 785 SNMP events. These rules enable automated processing and correlation of HP ProLiant and Fibre Channel Management SNMP events generated by HP Insight Management Agents. For a full list of HP event rules, see “HP SNMP events” (on page 20) and “Non-HP SNMP events” (on page 179). As an example of this functionality, the following figure displays an Event List with a Critical event.

Customizing the rules file If you must customize the rules file for the end user environment: • Use the nco_syntax command to check the syntax of the rules file after modifications to avoid syntax errors. • Changing the alert group and type may affect the correlation of traps.

Appendix A: Troubleshooting and known issues Troubleshooting The following sections contain information for troubleshooting issues relating to merging and operating the Probes rule file for Netcool/OMNIbus. Verifying the rules file status To determine if the rules file for Netcool/OMNIbus have uploaded successfully, look at the installation log file, mttrapd.log. The log file is saved to the /opt/netcool/omnibus/log file.
