3.1.1 Learn HP Insight Control server provisioning concepts
Insight Control server provisioning uses resources to provision target servers with operating systems
and updates like HP Service Packs for ProLiant. They are stored in the IC server provisioning
appliance database. These resources and how they work together are outlined below.
Expanded information can be found by browsing the online help table of contents, which is
organized by resource, and the “[Glossary] ” (page 113).

Servers – Servers in IC server provisioning generally refer to target servers that need to be or have
been discovered and are available to be managed. Discovered servers are listed in the master
pane of any Servers screen. IC server provisioning works with HP ProLiant servers only.
OS Build Plans – Build Plans are used to accomplish all provisioning chores on target servers. Build
Plans are made up of steps. A step can be a script, package, or configuration file. When a Build
Plan runs, it executes its steps in order; a running Build Plan is called a job.
Scripts – IC server provisioning supports many types of scripting languages so you can run scripts
on your target servers to accomplish provisioning tasks. Run a script by placing it as a step in an
OS Build Plan. See “About scripts” (page 64) for additional information.
Packages – Packages are compressed (zipped) files you can place and then decompress on the
target server as part of a deployment. A package is delivered to a target server when the package
is a step in a Build Plan. See “About packages” (page 75) for additional information.
