HP Insight Control Virtual Machine Management 6.0
Configuring Insight Control virtual machine management to manage virtual machine
hosts behind a firewall
When managing virtual machine hosts behind a firewall, the firewall must be configured to enable Insight
Control virtual machine management traffic through the firewall. The following ports are used for:
• Communication between browsers and the HP SIM Web Service uses HTTPS over port 50000.
• Communication between the Web Service and the VMM Service (both on the HP SIM CMS) uses SSL
over port 40420, assigned with the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA).
• Communication between the VMM Service and VMM Agent (on virtual machine hosts) uses SSL over
ports 1125 and 1126, assigned with the IANA.
• Communication between the VMM Agents during a move or copy uses SSL over port 1126, assigned
with the IANA.
In addition to the standard ports, Insight Control virtual machine management also opens additional ports
dynamically. The free ports might be different at various instances of the agent, causing the exact port
numbers to be different.
Microsoft DNS Server might not map the host name to DHCP-generated IP addresses
If DHCP is used on the VMware ESX Server host, then the Microsoft DNS server might not map the host name
to DHCP-generated IP addresses. HP recommends creating a static IP address.
Virtual machine hosts are in different subnets
For Microsoft Hyper-V servers, the Unable to register the VM / Fail to share the
destination VM folder error message appears in the log file if either of the following occurs:
• The source and destination Microsoft Hyper-V server hosts are in different subnets.
• The destination folder on the virtual machine host cannot be shared.
Insight Control virtual machine management controls
Virtual machine host and guest icons do not appear in Insight Control virtual machine
management
If the virtual machine host and guests were previously accessible from Insight Control virtual machine
management and display an Information icon in the HP SIM console, verify that the host is licensed. If the
host was licensed with a demo license, then the license might have expired. Obtain a permanent license for
the host.
