HP Insight Control Virtual Machine Management 6.0

VMConfigRefreshRate=<< value in milli seconds >>
For example, VMConfigRefreshRate = 5000
The value of the parameter can be between 5 seconds and 5 minutes. Any values entered outside this range
are automatically adjusted to the max/min value of the range.
Because increasing the polling frequency also reduces the ability of Insight Control virtual machine
management to identify the changes in virtual machine status.
Setting the alternate virtual machine host
After virtual machines are successfully migrated to an alternate host after failed host recovery is performed,
the virtual machines might not be restored to the same state as they were before the migration. If Insight
Control virtual machine management records the last known state of the virtual machine when the host was
shutting down, then the powered off state of the virtual machine is recorded and the virtual machine is
migrated with the powered off state.
For Microsoft Hyper-V R2 servers, virtual machines must meet either of the following requirements for setting
an alternate virtual machine host:
The virtual machines must be created on clusters shared volumes.
The virtual machines on the host must be highly available and in running state.
••
1. On the HP SIM All Systems page, select the VMware ESX Server virtual machine.
2. From the HP SIM toolbar, select ConfigureVirtual MachineSet Alternate Virtual Machine Host.
3. Verify the source virtual machine, and then click Next.
4. Select the recovery hosts from the list of authorized licensed hosts, and then click Run Now.
If some Insight Control virtual machine management menu options do not appear, then verify that at least
one virtual machine guest has been properly discovered.
Handling prefailure events
For Xen on RHEL and SLES, prefailure events are not supported.
HP SIM can detect certain prefailure alerts and generate corresponding events. Insight Control virtual machine
management uses VMotion for VMware ESX, XenMotion for Citrix XenServer, and Live Move capability in
Microsoft Hyper-V R2 R2 servers as event handlers for these events, so that the virtual machine can be moved
to an alternate host before the system fails or is placed in maintenance mode.
The capability to detect prefailure alerts is supported in the following cases:
vCenter Server 2.5 and 4.0 platforms and for VMware ESX hosts and virtual machines that are on
shared storage
Citrix XenServer, XenServer host, and virtual machines that are on shared storage in a resource pool
For Microsoft Hyper-V R2 servers, virtual machines must be highly enabled and running to be moved
to alternate virtual machine hosts upon receiving the prefailure alerts
Prerequisites
Prerequisites For the prefailure events to work you must have a system collection created in HP SIM. To create
a System collection:
1. In the left Pane in HPSIM, under System and Event Collections then click Customize
2. Select New....
3. Select Choose members individually
4. In the Choose from
menu, choose All Systems
.
5. Select the servers that have access to the same LUNs on shared storage.
6. Save the collection with an appropriate name, for example, Prefailure VMware ESX Collection, by
clicking Save as Collection
