HP Insight Control for Linux 6.3 Release Notes
3.4.2.10 Decide on the type of database: the SIM database or an existing Oracle database
By default, SIM installs and uses its own instance of PostgresSQL as its database. SIM is also
compatible with Oracle 9i Release 2 and Oracle 10g Release 2.
During the Insight Control for Linux installation process, you have the option to use an existing
instance of a supported version of Oracle if you want to override the default SIM database.
To use an Oracle database, you must create the Oracle database using Unicode (AL32UTF8) as
the character set before installing Insight Control for Linux. You must also specify the location of
the thin client .jar file (ojdbc14.jar). SIM requires Oracle database and Transparent Network
Substrate (TNS) listener services to be up and running when the system is restarted. For information
on the information you need to provide for an Oracle database during installation, see Table 5-1,
Insight Control for Linux installation questions, in Section 5.2.
Oracle by itself does not start the Oracle database and TNS listener automatically. An Oracle
database administrator (DBA) must set these services to be restarted when the server is reset. See
the Oracle documentation for details on how to start these services automatically.

Description and user actionQuestion
You have the option to use an existing instance of a supported version of an Oracle
database if you want to override the default SIM database.
If you decide to use an existing Oracle database, be prepared to supply the
following configuration information:
• IP address or host name of your existing Oracle database
• The port number for connecting to the Oracle server. The default port number
is 1521.
• The name of the Oracle database instance at the corresponding Oracle database
server.
• The Oracle database user name and password used to connect to the Oracle
database server.
Use the same Oracle database user name and password when prompted for
the database credentials of HP virtualization software.
• The full path to the Oracle thin client driver .jar file, which should be named
ojdbc14.jar. This path is not required if the .jar file is already in the
CLASSPATH for SIM and JBoss.
The SIM Oracle configuration script reports an error if the driver class cannot
be loaded. This installation does not copy a .jar file if it already exists in the
CLASSPATH for SIM and JBoss. By default, the ojdbc14.jar file is not shipped
with SIM, you can download it from the Oracle web site.
Use the same Oracle database user name and password when prompted for the
HP virtualization software database credentials.
