1 Overview and description 1.1 Insight Control for Linux overview Insight Control for Linux is a Linux-hosted management product for HP ProLiant servers in enterprise environments and high performance workgroups. Insight Control for Linux is designed as a plug-in to HP Systems Insight Manager (SIM).
1.3.2 Support for new operating systems • • Support for the following operating system: ◦ Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 Update 6 ◦ Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 ◦ SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 Service Pack 4 Support for the following virtualization operating systems: ◦ VMware ESX (4.0 U3 and 4.1 U1) ◦ VMware ESXi (4.0 U3 and 4.1 U1) ◦ Xen (RHEL 5.6, RHEL 6.0, SLES 10 SP4) ◦ KVM (RHEL 5.6 and RHEL 6.
Insight Control for Linux end user license agreement (EULA) are included with Insight Control for Linux. To view the EULA after the Insight Control for Linux installation, do one of the following: • Use a text editor to open the /opt/hp/icelx/EULA/IC-Linux-EULA.txt file • Use a browser to open the /opt/hp/icelx/EULA/IC-Linux-EULA.html file HP addresses security bulletins for the software components listed in the EULA with the same level of support afforded HP products.
1.9 Software availability in native languages The Insight Control for Linux product is available only in the US English language.
2 Issues and suggested actions 2.1 Customer advisories A customer advisory is a concise communication clearly identifying specific issues and the effective resolution for selected servers. If you are experiencing difficulty, there might be a customer advisory that can help you. You can receive proactive customized email messages that provide customer advisories as well as drivers, software patches, product change notifications, patches, security bulletins, and more.
1. 2. 3. Delete the file /var/opt/hpsmdb/data/postmaster.pid file (where pid is the process id for the postmaster service). Reboot the system. Rerun the Insight Control for Linux installation script: # install.sh --upgrade • Follow this procedure to restart the postmaster service manually: 1. On the CMS, switch to user hpsmdb: # su hpsmdb 2. Start the postmaster command: # /opt/hpsmdb/bin/postmaster –D /var/opt/hpsmdb/data & NOTE: 3. This command must run in the background.
• Alternatively, use the Mozilla Firefox browser. 2.5 Discovery This section contains notes about discovery. 2.5.1 Servers with NetXen gPXE NIC require DHCP modifications A server with a NetXen gPXE 4.0.230 NIC will not accept an IP address from a Linux-based dhcpd server, which causes problems with the discovery process. Corrective action: Add the following lines to the /etc/dhcpd.conf file on the dhcpd server: # gpxe option option option option options space gpxe; gpxe.
2.7 Management and monitoring notes This section contains notes that apply to Insight Control for Linux management and monitoring features. 2.7.1 Metrics for HP ProLiant DL100 series servers might not be individually reported Some HP ProLiant DL100 series servers temperature and fan sensor metrics are not individually reported by default. Instead, they are tallied in the "Sensor Count" metric.

IMPORTANT: Only the 12-core version of these servers are affected. They are equipped with the AMD SR5690 NB (PCI-E Gen2 and HT3) and AMD SP5100 SB (PCI-E Gen2 link to SR5690) chip sets. The servers are: • BL465c G7 • SL165s G7 • DL165 G7 • BL685c G7 • SL165z G7 • DL385 G7 • DL685 G7 Use the following table to determine the boot parameter to enter in the Kernel append line text field.
For example, if the source managed system has two disks, but the target managed system only has one disk, you might see the following message in /tmp/rct-debug.log: yyyy/mm/dd yyyy/mm/dd yyyy/mm/dd yyyy/mm/dd time: time: time: time: Waking up Capturing GrubBootLoader loader Image Service genDeployCmds genDeployCmds Failed : Message = target does not have enough drives for the image 2.10.1.
2.11.1 ESX 4.x installations using PXE fails — Unable to immediately obtain a dynamic address for this interface console message When installing an ESX 4.x OS using PXE, the installation fails with the following console message: Unable to immediately obtain a dynamic address for this interface. ESX 4.x uses a generated MAC address for the installation service console. The ESX 4.x installation was unable to obtain an IP address from the DHCP server for the generated MAC address.
c. d. 3. Change the file permissions of vmmclicapture.sh to 777 or 755. Move the file to the /opt/hpvmm/clientapi/bin/ directory. Change directory to /opt/mx/lbin/: # cd /opt/mx/lbin 4. Execute the simpcapture command: # ./simcapture The HP Insight Control virtual machine management log files will be stored in the /var/opt/ mx/logs/simcapture/vmm/ directory and backed up in the simcapture.tar.gz file. The output of the vmmclicapture.

3.4.2.10 Decide on the type of database: the SIM database or an existing Oracle database By default, SIM installs and uses its own instance of PostgresSQL as its database. SIM is also compatible with Oracle 9i Release 2 and Oracle 10g Release 2. During the Insight Control for Linux installation process, you have the option to use an existing instance of a supported version of Oracle if you want to override the default SIM database.
You can either copy a partial PSP, which is packaged with SIM, or download a complete PSP. 3.3.2 Correction to Section 9.3.1, Additional prerequisites for certain ProLiant servers The paragraphs preceding Table 9-3, Download web address for initrd files, is incorrect. Replace it with the following text: 9.3.1 Additional prerequisites for certain ProLiant servers Some server/operating system combinations require an updated boot RAM disk (initrd).
