External switch port settings
The X9720 provides for a loop-free layer 2 network connection even when connected to multiple
switches or multiple ports on the same switch. This is possible through the HP Virtual Connect
implementation. Uplink ports on external switches should be set up with:
• Portfast-enabled or vendor-provided settings to remove the ports from Spanning Tree, or related
technologies that inhibit packet forwarding on reset
• Link Aggregation (optional)
Supported: Link Aggregation Control Protocol (LACP)/802.3ad◦
◦ Not Supported: Port Aggregation Protocol (PAgP)
Cabling example including switch redundancy
The current X9720 Virtual Connect configuration requires redundant external switches for the
cluster network to remain in operation if an external switch fails. Virtual Connect Flex-10 module
ports X1-X6 can be used for uplinks to connect to external switches using either 1Gb/s or 10Gb/s
SFP/SFP+ modules. The following figure shows the Virtual Connect Flex-10 module.
