Host server considerations
This section provides important information about the host ser ver.
Windows2000andWindowsServer2003considerations
Drive-letter remapping c an occur in the following situations and can affect data access.
• Replacing o
ne server with another
• Replacing an FCA in one of your systems
During a ser ver or adapter changeover, use Disk Manager to manually remap drives to drive
letters. T
hisrestoresproperaccesstoyourdata.
When you replace an FCA in a server, you must reinstall the adapter driver. Windows 2000
and Windows Server 2003 automatically reload the original adapter driver and reset important
registry s
ettings. New connections are created on the HSV controller. Assign the new W W N s to
the appropriate host.
Registry growth in Windows
The Windows plug-and-play feature limits the number of plug-and-play devices that are add ed or removed
from the registry. When you add or remove devices, or create or delete snapshots, the plug-and-play
manager adds entries to the registry, which can cause the registry to exceed the allowed capacity.
If the registry contains m ore than 700 entries, the next time the system reboots, the following error
message appears: Failed to load Windows 2000 due to a file missing or corrupt
in the \WINNT\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM directory.
See the Microsoft Knowledge Base article (Q269075) for more i nformation about the registry growth issue.
Known limitations for large LUNs in Windows 2000
In Windows 2000, if you remove any logical unit number (LUN) greater than 7, and then you perform a
subsequent disk scan, the Found New Hardware wizard may ask you to finish installing the device tha t
was rem
oved. The Device Manager may display the device with a yellow warning icon. Reboot the
system to remove the device.
Windows 2000 dynamic disk snapshots and snapclones
The Windows 2000 environment does not suppor t the use of snapshots and snapclones in HP SANs if the
snapshot or snapclone is presented to the same host as the LUN from which the snapshot or snapclone
was created. Snapshot and snapclone are features of the HSV controller-based HP storage systems. All
