Selecting an appropriate time to perform an online upgrade
To ensure the success of an online upgrade (controller and/or disk drive firmware), selecting the
appropriate time is essential. Because the online firmwareupgradeisperformedwhilehostI/Osare
being serviced, the I/O load can impact the upgrade process. Selecting a period of low I/O activity will
ensure the upgrade completes as quickly as possible, and will avoid disruptions to host and applications
due to timeouts. To perform an online disk drive firmware, you must be running HP Command View
EVA 6.0 or later.
When performing an online upgrade, select a time period that meets the following criteria:
• I/Ospersecond(IOPS)shouldbelessthan4000
• I/O throughp ut should be less than 40 MB/s
See the online firmware upgrade white paper for graphs to help determine the appropriate time.
NOTE:
The above values apply when upgrading the EVA3 000/5000 storage systems. These values do not
apply to EVA 4 000/6000/8000 storage systems.
Analyzing storage system I/O using HP Command View EVAPerf
The HP Command View EVAPer f tool included with HP Command View EVA can be used to gather and
analyze statistics on storage system utilization. This section provides recommendations on using HP
Command View EVAPerf to gather statistics to help identify periods of low stora ge system activity.
If you are unfamiliar with HP Command View EVAPerf, see the “Monitoring array performance” chapter
of the HP StorageWorks Command View EVA user guide for more information. See Table 2 for the
link to this guide.
