HP StorageWorks Enterprise Virtual Array 3000/5000 Release Notes VCS 4.001 (5697-5476, December 2005)
Operating c onst
raints
This section id
entifies operating constraints specific to the EVA3000/5000 hardware and VCS software.
Operating cons
traints for related software applications are included in the following documents:
• HP OpenView Storage Management Appliance Software release notes
• HP StorageWorks Command View EVA 4.1 release notes
• HP StorageWor
ks Continuous Access EVA 2.2 release notes
• HP StorageWorks Business Copy EVA 3.1 release n otes
• HP StorageWorks Replication Solution Manager 1.2 release notes
Refer to Table 1 for links to the web sites for these products.
Any operatin
g constraints pertaining to the host operating system can be found in the individual op erating
system relea
se notes. See "Supported operating system specifications" on page 6.
Upgrading in an HP Continuous Access EVA environment
The following restrictions apply when upgrading to VCS v4.001 on EVA3000/5000 storage systems
running Continuous Access EVA:
• The upgrade process should be c ompleted within one week (168 hours). The time window begins
with the upg rade of the first storage system. It concludes when all stora ge systems with a direct or
indirect Continuous Access relationship to the first storage system have been upgraded.
• Ensure that all storag e systems involved in a DR relationship are fully functional with no failed
hardware.
• When using multiple Continuous Access relationships, ma ke sure the following conditions are met:
• Not more than two VCS versions (either v3.028 or v4.001) are running.
• All EVA 4000/6000/8000 storage systems must be running only one version of XCS (V5.030
or later).
• If you need to update both VCS an d XCS, do n ot attempt to upgrade both simultaneously.
Complete the upgrade one family of firmware before upgrading the other.
• Suspend DR group replication for the duration of the upgrade process on the destination, even if
the intersite links are not available.
• Do not create or delete D R groups or add members or remove members from DR groups when
any storage system in the Continuous Access relationship is still on VCS 3.028 and others are
on VCS v4.001.
A code load of one controller forces both controllers on a storage system to reboot. If the controller being
upgraded is used as a destination for replication I/O, the source controller logs new I/O while the
destination controller reboots. After completing the firmware upgrade of the destination then resume
the replication to allow the controller to perform a m erge. Wait for the m erge to conclude after a code
load, or wait three minutes—whichever is longer—before performing the c od e load on any other storage
system in the relationship.
Avoiding problem situations
This section identifies problem situations specific to the EVA3000/5000 hardware and VCS software.
Info
rmation for related software applications are included in the documents listed in O perating c onstraints.
Inf
ormation on avoiding problem situations specific to operating systems can be found in the individual
ope
rating system connectivit y release notes. See "Supported operating system specifications" on page 6.
