1 Host connectivity
This chapter provides host connectivity information and links to components you nee d to s uppor t your
operating system with an Enterprise Virtual Array storage system. It i s important that you proceed in the
following order:
• Download Fibre Channel adapter fi rmware
• Install VMware
• Upgrade VM ware
• Configure the EVA3000/5000 in VMware host servers
• ConfiguretheVMwarehostserver
• Set up multipathing
• Use the Storage System Scripting utility

Installing VMware
For instructions on installing VMware, see the VMware installation guide for your ser ver.
Upgrading VMware
If you have already installed ESX 2.5.x, use the following procedure to upgrade the system software:
1. Extract the upgrade-tar-ball file on the system. Two sample extract commands follow:
$ gunzip e
sx-2.5.1-14182-upgrade.tar.gz
$ tar -xvf esx-2.5.1-14182–upgrade.tar
2. Boot the system in Linux m o de by selecting the Linux boot option from the boot menu selection
screen.
3. Issue the upgrade.pl command.
4. Reboot the system using the default boot option (esx).
If you have E SX 3 .0.x installed, download the latest patches from the VMware website:

Since the installation procedure may be different for some updates, be sure to read and follow the
instructions provided by VMware. In general, the procedure is as follows:
1. Extract the upgrade-tar-ball file on the system. The following is a samp le c ommand:
$ tar -x
zvf ESX-1000039.tgz
2. Change directory to the untared update directory.
3. Issue the esxcfg-update command:
