HP StorageWorks EML E-Series Ultrium 1840 tape drive moduleupgrade or replacement service guide (AH682-96001, October 2007)

6 Replacing an LTO2 or LTO3 tape drive
in a library without any LTO4 tape drives
installed
6.1 Record library settings
Replacing an LTO2 or LTO3 tape drive with an LTO4 tape drive requires
all host mapping, par titioning, access control, and F C speed settings to
be cleared out and manually re-entered at the end of the replacement
procedure. In preparation for this, use Command View TL or the
Interface Manager CLI to write down all these set t ings before beginning
the drive replacement. Because the hardware and device paths will
change, ETLA’s save/restore features can not be used to re-enter old
settings.
6.2 Upgrade library and drive firmware
Upgrade the firmware for all library components so they will recognize
the LTO4 tape drive.
Upgrade the drive firmwar e for all LTO2 and LTO3 tape drives in the
library so they will properly handle the LTO4 media.
IMPORTANT:
L T O2 and L T O3 tape drives require the most recent firmware
to immediately identify LTO4 media. Without the most recent
firmware, loading an LTO4 cartridge into an earlier generation
drive may result in a long media identification and unload time.
The drive may not identify the media and return a load error
before the application times out waiting for the load. HP strongly
recommends keeping your tape drives updated to the most recent
firmware.
6.3 Open the library
Open the back doors of the library.
6.4 In
stall the internal network switch
Insta
ll the switch for the internal network using the installation poster
incl
uded in the Internal Network Kit.
IMPORTANT:
Do not c onnect the switch to the local L AN. The switch is used
for internal library communication. Connecting it to a LAN can
cause library components to perform incorrectly or r e port failures.
6.5 Remove the ol
dtapedrive
Unload any tape cartridges in the drive to be removed using your
application software or the library operator control panel (OCP). Use
your backup software to stop library activity.

DisconnecttheFCcablefromthedrivetobereplacedbypressing
down on the cable connector tab and pulling the connector away from
the drive. Disconnect the other end of the FC cable from the interface
controller card.
If necessary, use a screwdriver to loosen the captive screw at the right
side of the drive module. Grasp the drive and pull the drive from the
drive bay.
NOTE
:
Leave the interface controller card in the library to maintain
pr oper airflow.
