HP DC04 SAN Director Switch Hardware Reference Guide

1 DC04 SAN Director overview
The DC04 SAN Director (part numbers AR478A, AR478B, AR479A, AR479B) represents the next
generation of advanced Fibre Channel (FC) enterprise-class platforms used to intelligently
interconnect storage devices, hosts, and servers in a SAN.
The DC04 SAN Director satisfies the most demanding RAS, performance, and scalability
requirements, while delivering investment protection, interoperability, and fabric-based intelligence
advantages.
This chapter provides an overview for the DC04 SAN Director.
Features
Key features of the DC04 SAN Director include:
Up to 256-port horizontal chassis with four usable port blades (in addition to two core switching
and two core processing blades).
Up to 512 ports can connect using ICLs.
Support for high-performance Director blades running at 1, 2 , 4, 8, or 10 Gb/s, enabling
flexible system configuration
Supports 1, 2, 4, and 8 Gb/s autosensing FC ports. Trunking technology groups up to eight
ports to create high performance 64-Gb/s ISL trunks between switches:
10-Gb/s ports (FC10-6) are 10 Gb/s only.
Dual-redundant CP blades (CP8) and core switch blades (CR4S-8) provide high availability
and enable nondisruptive software upgrades.
Data cryptographic (encryption/decryption) and data compression capabilities through the
FS8-18 encryption blade.
Redundant and hot-swappable CP8 and CR4S-8 blades, power supplies, blower assemblies,
and WWN cards enable a high availability platform for mission critical SAN applications.
Modular hot-swappable application blades:
FR4-18i, 18-port (16 FC and 2 GbE), up to four blades per chassis, supporting FCR
Services and FCIP
FX8-24, FX8-24E, 24 port (12 8-Gb/s FC, 10 1-GbE, and 2 10-GbE), up to two blades
per chassis with Fabric OS 6.3.x (except for FX8–24E, which is supported only with
Fabric OS 7.1.0a and later), supporting FCR Services and FCIP. Increased to up to four
blades per chassis with Fabric OS 6.4.x. The FX8-24 supports IPsec encryption over one
10 GbE port and the FX8-24E supports IPsec encryption over both 10 GbE ports.
FCOE10-24, 24 port CEE blade, up to two blades per chassis.
NOTE: The FCOE10-24 blade can only be installed in the same chassis with FC8-XX
(except FC8-64), and/or FC10-6 blades. It is not supported in the chassis with any other
blades.
ICL through CR4S-8 blades.
