6. On Advanced NDMP Object Properties you can now specify your backup specific environment
variable, such as EXCLUDE to exclude specific file types or directories.

Performance and implementation considerations
As described earlier in this paper, there are two methods of backing up the data on NAS filers. The
first method uses the regular file system backup of the application server. The NAS share is backed up
using the same process as the backup of a file system on a local disk. This method is well understood
and simple, but not optimized for NAS filer protection.
The second method uses NDMP to enable a direct backup from the filer to the HP StoreOnce Backup
System. This requires additional setup and licensing, as covered in detail in this paper, but is
optimized for NAS filer protection. The performance and implementation considerations for both
methods are summarized in Table 1.
