Zero Downtime Backup of MaxDB database with HP Data Protector

Executive summary
At the moment, there is no official DP-MaxDB interface to perform Zero Downtime Backup (ZDB) and
Instant Recovery for Data Protector versions 5.5, 6.0, as well as 6.1. However, it is possible to
perform ZDB using a scripted solution. This white paper provides the procedure on how to ZDB a
MaxDB instance and potentially restore it to any point in time or to the latest point in time.
Supported systems
The MaxDB ZDB solution presented in this document has been tested on a combination of MaxDB 7.6
and Data Protector 6.1 on Windows 2003 32 bit OS in conjunction with EVA snapshot functionality.
This combination is supported.
The MaxDB ZDB solution may also work on other operating systems, like HP-UX and Linux variants.
However, these combinations have not been tested, and therefore, not supported.
Note
Do not modify the scripted MaxDB ZDB solution presented in this document.
Modification
s are not supported and you will end up operating in an
unsupported configuration.
