The reason for the failure is that, on ESX Server 4.1.0, Data Protector receives inconsistent
information from VMware when trying to back up a Windows Server 2008 virtual machine for
which the Use quiescence snapshots option is specified, but the Backup memory file
option is not. This is a VMware issue.
In such a configuration, LAN transportation mode fails and automatically switches to SAN. If the
backup host is not configured for SAN transportation mode (the storage volumes on which the
virtual machine files reside are not presented to the backup host or the backup host is a virtual
machine), SAN transportation mode fails as well.
Action
Ensure that either both Backup memory file and Use quiescence snapshots options are
selected or none of them.
