HP Data Protector software Jukebox and Standalone file
device
HP Data Protector software allows you to configure a Standalone or Jukebox file device. To simulate a
tape library, HP Data Protector software allows you to create a file jukebox, for example, on which
you create and format file media and use as a backup device. This device type evolved from having
a simple file-based test mechanism to remove hardware from a troubleshooting situation.
The jukeboxes should be optimized for maximum performance of the disk arrays, and use the same
features as a tape device does, such as streaming and multiple writers. With these jukeboxes or
standalone file devices, HP Data Protector software does not check for space remaining when writing
to a file device. If the disk runs out of space, the backup aborts.
By backing up data to a disk device, HP Data Protector software offers the advantage of quicker file
restoration. For instance, when a file has been backed up on disk, it is quicker to restore from a disk
medium than from a tape medium. Jukeboxes and standalone virtual tape disk devices simulate tape
devices, and would potentially show similar behavior. For instance, searching for a file would not
have physical start/stop media issues, but the file slots would be searched one by one as if they were
tape cartridges.
