At this point, the snapshot is visible on the backup host and data can be read and streamed to the
tape device by the Data Protector Media Agent.
In
Figure 5, the backup to tape is shown by the red line between the snapshot volume, the backup
host and the tape drive.

After Data Protector finishes with the backup of data to the tape device, there are two options that
Data Protector can perform:
• Un-present the snapshot from the backup host and delete it from the array. Both steps are done
using the 3PAR hardware provider.
• Data Protector keeps the snapshot on the array. The user is able to specify how many snapshots
Data Protector should keep. If this option is specified before each backup, Data Protector checks if
the number of snapshots to be kept has been reached. If this is the case, Data Protector deletes the
oldest set of virtual copies before starting the backup (see
Figure 6).
