HP StoreOnce Backup System Linux and UNIX Configuration Guide (BB852-90952)
1 Introduction
Overview
HP StoreOnce Backup Systems belong to a family of disk-based storage appliances for backing
up media network servers or PCs to target devices on the appliance. These devices are configured
as Network-Attached Storage (NAS), Catalyst Stores or Virtual Tape Library (VTL) targets for backup
applications.
The total number of backup targets supported on an appliance depends upon the model of HP
StoreOnce Backup System, from the low-end HP StoreOnce 2620 Backup system to the enterprise
class StoreOnce B6200 Backup System. These devices may be all VTL, all Catalyst, all NAS or
any combination of NAS, Catalyst and VTL devices.
For specific details of the VTL, Catalyst and NAS device options available, please refer to the HP
StoreOnce Backup System User Guide for your product.
NAS targets for backup applications
Support for both CIFS and NFS protocols means that NAS target devices may be created as backup
targets for both Windows and UNIX/Linux hosts, and may be used with most backup applications
that support backup to disk. NAS targets on an HP StoreOnce Backup System provide network
file share access that is optimized for backup to disk. They should not be used for general purpose
file storage.
Virtual Tape Library targets for backup applications
The backup target appears to the host as an Ultrium Tape Library and requires a backup application
that supports backup to tape. Tape Library emulation type is selected during initial configuration
and this determines the number of cartridge slots and embedded tape drives that may be configured
for the device. Virtual Tape Libraries provide considerable flexibility for a variety of backup rotation
schemes.
NOTE: The HP StoreOnce B6200 Backup System, which is the multi-node system, supports VTL
on Fibre Channel only. All single node Backup systems support VTL on iSCSI; higher end models
also support FC. For specific details of the VTL device options available, please refer to the Quick
Specs for your Product.
Catalyst Store targets for backup applications
HP StoreOnce Catalyst is a new device type that enables client side deduplication, ISV controlled
replication, multi-hp and one to many replication, asymmetric expiry of backups, and easier disaster
recovery (no imports necessary).
HP StoreOnce Catalyst can be used with the backup applications HP Data Protector, Symantec
NetBackup, or Symantec Backup Exec (check the EBS matrix to see which version is needed for
your OS). These backup applications allow the user to:
• Back up data to a target store on the HP StoreOnce Backup System. With these applications,
the dedupe can happen on the HP StoreOnce Backup System, or on the client’s media server,
therefore saving bandwidth.
• Manage replication between HP StoreOnce Backup Systems. All replication control is carried
out from the backup application, which makes this an attractive alternative to using the
replication function on the HP StoreOnce Backup System (which is configured and run without
any communication to/from the backup application).
These functions require a backup application that supports HP StoreOnce Catalyst. Some
applications require the HP OST 2.0 plugins to be installed on any Media Servers that will be
