This glossary defines terms used in this guide or related to this product and is not a
comprehensive glossary of computer terms.
A
API Application programming interface.
appliance An intelligent device programmed to perform a single well-defined function.
Appliances differ from general-purpose computers in that their firmware is normally customized
for the function they perform, pre-loaded by a vendor, and not alterable by the user.

LSU Logical storage unit. A representation of the physical storage for Backup Exec. The LSU hides the
physical storage from OpenStorage applications such as Backup Exec and allows the storage
server's physical storage to be partitioned in an appropriate way.
O
OST OpenStorage. A Symantec API that allows intelligent storage appliances to work with Backup
Exec software. Also an HP OST plug-in used to allow StoreOnce appliances to use the Symantec
OST API.
