vtl erase cartridges
Description of Command Function
Erases a range of cartridges within a given virtual tape library.
Command Syntax
vtl erase cartridges [SETX] LIBX from SLOT<num> to SLOT<num>

Command Object Requirements
• SET
X
– This object defines the service set containing the virtual tape library from which
cartridges are deleted. X is the numeric index of the service set. This object must be defined
when the command is used on a multi-node system. The use of this object is optional on a
single-node system. If it is used on a single-node system, the object must be defined as SET1.
• LIB
X
– This object is the virtual tape library from which cartridges are deleted. X is the numeric
index of the library.
Command Parameter Requirements
• from SLOT<num> – This is parameter defines the first slot in the range of slots to be erased.
The value is a slot identifier, and the range is inclusive. No slots in the range can be part of
replication target mapping.
• to SLOT<num> – This is parameter defines the last slot in the range of slots to be erased. The
value is a slot identifier, and the range is inclusive. No slots in the range can be part of a
replication target mapping.
Requirements for Command Execution
• The command entry must conform to command syntax.
• The defined service set must be valid.
• The defined library must be valid.
• From and To slot numbers must be provided.
• From and To slots must be valid slots in the target library.
• No slots in the range can be replication targets
Successful Command Output
Upon successful completion of the command, the following message is displayed, and then the
CLI user prompt is displayed.
Warning – Any data on the cartridge(s) will be lost, continue? (y/n)
A “y” response must be entered for command execution to continue.

Command Operation during Abnormal Conditions
• If any of the command execution requirements shown in Successful Command Output fail,
command execution terminates, the cartridge is not deleted, and one of the following error
messages is displayed.
◦ Command Failed – Did not conform to the correct command syntax
“vtl delete cartridge [SETX] LIBX [{CARTX | ALL}] [barcode
<string>] [mail <num>] [ slot <num> ]”
◦ Command Failed – The service set <SETX> is invalid
◦ Command Failed – The service set <SETX> does not exist
