3 Device Manager Agent Operations
This chapter describes how to specify commands used for Device Manager agent operations, and
gives details on Device Manager agent properties.
This chapter covers the following topics:
• Device Manager Agent Operations and Operating Methods (see section 3-1 )
• Notes on Device Manager Agent Operations (see section
3-2 )
• Starting and Stopping the Resident Program (hdvmagt) (see section 3-3 )
• Modifying Server Information (see section
3-4 )
• Changing the Execution Period (see section
3-5 )
• Device Manager Agent Commands (see section 3-6 )
• HiScan Command Syntax (see section
3-7 )
• hldutil Command Syntax (see section
3-8 )
• hdvmagt_schedule Command Syntax (see section 3-9 )
• hdvmagt_account Command Syntax (see section
3-10 )
• Property Files (see section
3-11 )
3-1 Configuring and Operating the Device Manager Agent
The Device Manager agent collects information about storage devices (logical units on a disk array)
that are connected to the host server as well as information about the host server itself. It then
transmits this information to the Device Manager server using TCP/IP. This collected information
includes the capacity and usage rate for each storage unit, the WWN of the HBA, mount points, file
system types, and SCSI addresses.
The Device Manager agent has a command (hldutil) that collects the aforementioned information,
a command (HiScan) that transmits the information to the Device Manager server, and a resident
program (hdvmagt) that provides information in response to requests from programs, such as the
Device Manager server and Dynamic Link Manager.
Each time it is started, hdvmagt transmits information to the Device Manager server. HiScan
transmits information to the Device Manager server according to a schedule that is selected during
the setup. Under the Run Daily option, the HiScan command is run each day at 2:47 a.m. Under the
Run Hourly option, the command is run at the 47th minute of each hour.
For details about HiScan, see section
3-7 . For details about hldutil, see section 3-8 . For details
about how to start the resident program (hdvmagt), see sections
3-9 and 3-10 .
CAUTION: When installing the Device Manager agent in multiple hosts, change the execution time for the
HiScan command to prevent the HiScan command from being executed simultaneously by the multiple
hosts.
When the Device Manager agent is normally installed, the resident program (hdvmagt) is
automatically started, and the HiScan command is periodically executed by the task management
function of the system.
CAUTION: The name of the host running the Device Manager agent must be unique for each the Device
Manager server to which information is to be reported.
3-1-1 Automatic and Manual Execution of the Device Manager Agent
There are two methods for operating the Device Manager agent: automatic execution and manual
execution:
• Under auto execution, the HiScan command is run according to the specified execution period.
