1-1 Tiered Storage Manager Features
1-1-1 Seamless Data Migration
Tiered Storage Manager is designed to migrate data between different volumes on a subsystem. Tiered
Storage Manager allows you to migrate data seamlessly:
• Current applications are not interrupted.
• You can access data in the same way both before and after it is migrated.
• Defining group attributes allows you set or disable migration for multiple volumes in advance, reducing
administrative time.
• You can use the StorageWorks XP12000/XP10000 subsystem to migrate data among multiple storage
subsystems in different storage environments.
• You can use either the web client or the command line interface to operate Tiered Storage Manager. For

1-1-2 Data Lifecycle Management
Tiered Storage Manager allows you to efficiently relocate data using Data Lifecycle Management. This
allocates the data storage destination using data access frequency and usage value. Information tends to
be accessed most frequently when it is first created, but that frequency drops as time passes. Data with a
high usage frequency is stored in high-performance storage. When the usage frequency of the data
drops, the data is migrated to a lower performance subsystem. This can significantly reduce storage cost.
