3-4 Registering an information source
A database that is used as an original source of information for XP Replication Monitor software is called an
information source. Examples of information sources include Device Manager servers and Business Continuity
Managers. This section explains how to register information sources.
NOTE: You do not need to register the Device Manager server that is installed on the same management
server as the XP Replication Monitor software you are configuring. This Device Manager server is registered
automatically when you install XP Replication Monitor software and is displayed as the local server on the list
of information sources.
The original sources of information that can be used by XP Replication Monitor software to collect information on
hosts, storage subsystems, volume pairs, and other devices depend on whether the host is an open system or a
mainframe system.
• For an open system, Device Manager servers and pair management servers and hosts managed by the
Device Manager servers constitute the original sources of information. Information indicating the volume
pair status is collected principally through XP Replication Monitor agents installed on the pair management
servers.
• For a mainframe system, Business Continuity Managers constitute the original sources of information.
When you register an information source, you must specify the following information about the Device Manager
server or Business Continuity Manager:
• Name (nickname) of the Device Manager server or Business Continuity Manager
• IP address or host name
• Port number
When the information source to be registered is a Device Manager server, you must also specify the following
information:
• Protocol used for communication with XP Replication Monitor software
• User ID for connecting to the Device Manager server
• Password for connecting to the Device Manager server
