Designing systems 11
1 Designing systems
The first consideration when you decide to design a system in which XP Replication Monitor software is used is
whether XP Replication Monitor software can be set up using the recommended standard system configuration. If,
for some reason, XP Replication Monitor software cannot be implemented without deviating from the standard
configuration, we recommend that you thoroughly examine the tasks and workflows you employ before making
the necessary changes to the standard configuration.
This chapter explains the recommended standard configuration, the functions of the system components, the
relationships and installation locations of the components, the flow of control and data between components, and
the points to consider before putting together a non-standard configuration.

1-1 Standard configuration of a XP Replication Monitor system
This section explains the standard configuration of a system in which XP Replication Monitor software is used.
Although this section describes separate configurations for open system hosts and mainframe system hosts, you
can use XP Replication Monitor software in mixed environments that include both open system and mainframe
system hosts.
Although the following explains the standard system configuration as comprising more than one site, a system
configuration consisting of a single primary site is also possible.
1-1-1 Standard configuration of an open system
The following figure illustrates the recommended standard configuration for an open system.
This configuration consists of two sites: a primary and a secondary site.
