HP StorageWorks P9000 Replication Manager Software 7.1 Configuration Guide (TB584-96022, May 2011)

Managing generations
Application Agent can associate multiple secondary volumes with a single primary volume. (These
secondary volumes are referred to as generations.) When selecting a secondary volume for a backup,
you can either select it manually or have Application Agent automatically rotate the volumes in the
same way that tape backups are re-used (local backups only). At the same time, Application Agent
allows you to lock the contents of certain secondary volumes and only use other (unlocked) secondary
volumes for backups. For more information, see the HP StorageWorks P9000 Replication Manager
Software User Guide.
NOTE:
The number of generations supported by Application Agent depends on the volume replication function
used, but the procedures are the same.
System requirements and supported environments
This section describes the requirements for hardware and software and the virtual environments
supported by Application Agent.
Application Agent system requirements
This section describes the hardware, host type, server, and storage system necessary to configure a
system for the use of Application Agent.
NOTE:
Replication Manager identifies the database application running on each host according to the version
of the Application Agent installed (Exchange or SQL Server). Therefore, do not install a version of
Application Agent on a host that does not have the corresponding database application installed.
If an inappropriate version of Application Agent is installed on a server, Replication Manager will
fail to collect information during Refresh Host processing and display an error message.
